Masterpieces in optimal condition
Various key works from the exhibition are undergoing conservation and restoration right now. They will be on display in optimal condition.
The absolute masterpiece, The Seven Sacraments by Rogier van der Weyden dating from 1440-45, is part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Restoration expert Griet Steyaert started thorough conservation and restoration work on the piece in 2006.
The treatment is needed because the paint layer is coming loose in some places. If action is not taken, there is a danger that fragments of paint may be lost. In addition to this, flaking and blisters need to be fixed. During the restoration, old faded retouches are removed. Layers, which are not original, are being removed if and when desirable. This way the original palette of colours comes back into its own. Lacunas are being carefully retouched.
Both before and during the treatment, the painting has been thoroughly investigated. All stages of the treatment are being documented, described and photographed in detail.
As this is an important work, the restoration is being conducted under the supervision of an international committee.
The restoration project is possible thanks to the support of the
Inbev-Baillet Latour Fund and SD Worx.
