For Rogier
Leuven's cultural institutions draw inspiration from the life and work of Rogier van der Weyden. Herewith an overview of events in the run-up to and during the exhibition.

SMART
Concert
Het Depot music centre pays tribute to the better Flemish song.
Smart brings to the stage famous Flemish pop and rock artists who
provide their own interpretations of golden oldies.
The line-up remains a well-guarded secret. The only certainty is
that the resident orchestra will be led by Jan Hautekiet.
A wonderfully packed and swinging evening is guaranteed. As one of
the last activities before Het Depot closes for renovation, it will
certainly become legendary.
Het Depot – Sunday September 13th and 14th 2009 - 20.00 hrs

THE CLERKS’ GROUP
Concert
One of the outstanding groups in its field, The Clerks'
recordings and performances of Renaissance vocal music have earned
them a place among the foremost interpreters of the repertoire. In
the magnificent abbey church of Grimbergen this mixed ensemble of
six sings music from the time of Rogier van der Weyden. An ode to
the Burgundian school and to Dutch polyphony, it focuses on the
compositions of Dufay, Binchois and Ockeghem, the musical
innovators of the fifteenth century.
It promises to be a very moving evening.

TRANSIT OPENING CONCERT
Concert
With TRANSIT, Flanders Festival explores classical music of the
twenty-first century. The Leuven festival commissioned two
compositions which take 'Master of Passions' as their starting
point.
The Scot James Dillon and the Frenchman Brice Pauset took up the
challenge. These two prominent composers were both inspired by the
fact that a number of works of art have been reunited after a very
long time.
Flanders Festival Flemish Brabant presents these two world
creations during TRANSIT's opening concert on Friday October 23rd
2009.
The Ictus Ensemble can be relied upon to provide an electric
interpretation.

VOICES OF PASSION
Festival
Voices of Passion adds a new, auditory dimension to Rogier van
der Weyden's visual genius. The refined virtuosity, the technical
mastery and the expressiveness of polyphony complement Rogier's art
in a logical and elegant manner. The festival provides
stratification on various levels: painting is both linked to and
confronted with music; our musical heritage is compared and
contrasted with our architectural heritage, and the past is
examined in the light of the present.
The result is an unforgettable total experience, a multiplicity of
voices which will amaze, move and exhilarate all at the same
time!
Voices of Passion take place from Wednesday October 28th till
Sunday November 1st.
The following concerts will take place:
• Wednesday October 28th : Capilla Flamenca; Dirk Snellings,
conductor & Psallentes, Hendrik Vanden Abeele, conductor at the
Saint-Peter's Church.
• Friday October 30th: Graindelavoix; Björn Schmelzer, conductor at
the Church Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Predikheren
• Saturday October 31st: Huelgas Ensemble; Paul Van Nevel,

CRIME PASSIONNEL
'Crime passionnel' is a project for and by young people
Exhibition
Fifteen young artists commit an impassioned murder. They fight a
duel with Mr. Primitive, i.e. Rogier van der Weyden.
Their weapons? Words, music, photography, paint, video, etc. Like
Rogier they are driven by passion, emotion and subdued expression.
The setting for this impassioned duel is Leuven's Town Hall. From
there the exhibition will travel on to Brussels and Tournai, the
two other cities which were important in Rogier's life.
Leuven Town Hall – Monday September 14th to Sunday November 1st

Stories from Leuven's Bench of Aldermen
Exhibition
Life as it must have been in Leuven at the time of Rogier van
der Weyden.
The Bench of Aldermen was both a court of law and a sort of
notary's office. It is brought back to life in its original
location: the Town Hall. Medieval characters introduce themselves
and take us off on a fascinating journey through time in the city
centre. The exhibition is the result of a large-scale project
mounted by the City Archive in a bid to digitize the past and make
it accessible.
Leuven Town Hall – Tuesday November 3rd to Saturday December 5th
2009
Organized by the City Archive and Leuven Heritage Unit

PRAYER. A HUMAN FUNCTION
Dance/performance/installation
‘PRAYER. A human function’ by the German singer and
choreographer Heike Schmidt was inspired by the question of how and
why people pray. She went and talked to people about this in places
as far afield as Leuven, Genk, Peking, Athens and Dresden. Their
stories and their movements provided the starting-point for the
show's choreography.
‘PRAYER. A human function’ is a unique portrait of the experience
of praying and of the physical movements associated with it in
different cultures and religions.
